Just noticed something...

Did anyone else noticed how overrated are two handed weapons and dual wielding in movies (and many games)?

It is like, for every main protagonist using sword and shield, or spear, there are thousands upon thousands of those who either use bigass sword, katana, or dual wielding.

Fuck that.

Actually in all the D&D editions I know of, dual-wielding is pretty shitty unless you invest into unrealistic skills.

Yep, i played dragon age 1handed with no shield and my housemate shouted at me all the way through that i was playing it wrong lol, cos the melee 'classes' were dual weilding, sword and shield, or 2hand, and i couldnt benefit from any of them cos i refused to dual wield but didnt want a shield lol.

Just once i want a game that lets you dual wield, but you don't gain extra attacks, or deal more damage, or any of the other bullshit, just having it there being totally shit and nonviable would be lovely...

I guess rpg game mentality is like your left hand is an extra equipment 'slot' so if you don't have something equipped there you arent maximising your potential -.- and every other game/movie just want to look cool.

Yeah, I see nothing wrong with using single one handed weapon. It leaves you fast and you can also grapple, above other things.

I was just watching Sword Art Online thinking: WOOOW finally a semi-orignal protagonist, with a single one handed sword!

Then came the episode 9, and when he drawn the second sword I was like "YOU WHAT MOTHERFUCKER?"

Same with guns. Why to use two goddamn pistols when you can use smg to much better ends?

Haha xD that was pretty much my reaction watching Sword Art Online...
'Oh boy no magic!'
'Oh nice, no dumb anime style weapons.... Oh wait.'
'But at least there's no magic and everyone looks like real people, not green haired elf-eared anime characters...'

True, and the story is pretty solid and the art-style is great .

Still, this thing with dual-wielding really knocked it down in my eyes. At least he had his ass handed to him by the guild leader who uses sword and shield.

Also, a duel is either sword + shield or sword only.

Annoyed me, when I watched Spartacus. I like fights with that mentioned above but then Spartacus gets a second sword and it sadly stays like that the other two seasons as well. However Gannicus already had 2 swords and he keeps them as well... prefering watching a fight with a spear over that as well!
And in most games it's even more awful..

Two short swords isn't that impractical.

Or one long and one short, for that matter.

There's a reason why I like swashbuckler films. :)

Even Sword + Dagger sometimes.

Of course, but it has became so cliche that everytime I see it it makes drives me nuts.

True. Good thing that they mostly make these armours look at least slightly believable.

Mostly that is. I have seen more chain-mail bikini armors than I ever wanted..

People underestimate the importance of keeping a hand free, imagine even trying to sprint with both arms strapped to your sides, you could probably do it... But you'd be worse than anyone of equal talent who had use of their arms. Nearly everything physical you do is using more of your body than your average person thinks
Having two swords doesn't mean you can't use those arms for balance and most other things. You can do that just as well. Running with two swords is very different from running with both arms strapped to your sides.

It was an over the top example yeah, but the point i was trying to make is how much you rely on seemingly non-essential stuff like a free hand to do other stuff like sprinting or precision work with the other hand. Balance is possible, but slower because it's weighed down, and whilst you're doing it the unused sword in your left or right hand that you're trying to use to balance is just dead weight, since you're not going to be able to attack with both swords at the same time whilst maintaining any kind of poise or balance.

I just don't see the point other than it looking cool. I dunno, if i'd never seen it in games or movies before i'd probably think it was cool the first time i saw it, but it just looks shoddy now it's everywhere for no good reason.

There is simply no way to make dual wielding two full sized swords viable. It is uselful to have full sized sword and parrying dagger or short sword, but that style is vastly different from true dual wielding, which is way too impractical to use.

On the contrary, a sword and dagger/shortsword is true dual wielding, while two longswords is the fantasy dual wielding.
