http://www.reddit.com/r/h1z1/comments/22nr99/what_weve_learned_now/

ok yeah its another dayz rip. the thing is tho:

this is sony not some dodgy indy dev
this is planetside side 2 engine, expect more than 30 fps
this is going to be an actual mmo with thousands on one server and a map much bigger than ps2.
focus on building structures/bases/crafting, hopefully stuff to do other than pick stuff off the floor and kill people with it.

Kind of makes dayz sound like just a ~100 player death match. So yeah to me this is more interesting than dayz SA or any thing else since the mod.

edit: ok did just see the other thread but its title didnt say h1z1 so I didn't notice it !

Show me a game that does better than Planetside 2 with that many people doing that many things simultaneously. Besides, it's pretty good looking.

Yeah, yeah.

But I couldn't ignore the irony in there, SOE always screwing up performance with their sheaningans

As much as I think they'd be better off making something other than another zombie game, I have faith in SOE. No matter how shit fps, their engine just can't be worse than Arma 2 engine.

Quote
I've seen a bunch of people asking questions about the map size. Forgelight is built to handle arbitrarily sized worlds. Our plan is simple -- we're building the core of "anywhere USA". When we first open it up to users the map will be huge, but nowhere near as big as it's going to be in short order. Our map editing system allows us to quickly add massive areas. We want to make sure we clearly understand how the players are playing the game before we do that. On PlanetSide 2 we made a mistake by making multiple continents before we had a strong enough idea of what worked and what didn't. This game is different. We're doing it smarter.

When we open up the early access there will be a massive map for players to enjoy. Over time (very quickly) they'll magically just be able to keep going further than they've gone before. It's a very unique way of doing it, but we actually think this is a better way to go.

So not to worry. Zombie Apocalypse isn't going to be any fun if it's like Disneyland on Spring Break and super-crowded. We want remote... haunting... being scared when you see someone. Your first instinct needs to be to hide. If there are 20 players in your view it's not a very convincing Apocalypse.

So how many players per server? Who knows. As we add more land the number of people we can hold on a server goes way up. So we're excited. We have a ton of zombies for you to fight too. You'll be seeing hordes, oh yes you will.

ARMA2 engine will never be able to support as many players fighting like PS2 can.

Zombie games may seem old fashioned and a dime a dozen, but not a single one of them ever fulfilled the promise of a real massively multiplayer zombie survival game. In that instance, we've never had one and so it is impossible for it to be a tired concept.

I'll turn 50 in 30 years before DayZ will enter beta stage. I hope someone releases a finished MMO Zombie survival game for once. And this sounds promising.

Some of our outcomes. Please note I'll do a comprehensive posting after we're done with this. We have another meeting Thursday to discuss.

We will be selling wearables. We felt like this will be a good, fair revenue generator. However - we recognize how important finding wearables in the world is so you'll be able to find and craft a lot of stuff. We agree that's something important. We've also come up with a pretty awesome idea to let players who kill other players loot stuff. So if a player has a black ski mask and gets killed by another player, that player can wear the ski mask for a few deaths (we have durability in the game. Station Cash wearables won't degrade at all but when you loot something.. it will degrade. Please note the original player always keeps their SC purchased wearables. This gives the great feeling of whacking some unsuspecting fool who decided to bring a knife to a gun fight.

We will NOT be selling Guns, Ammo, Food, Water... i.e. That's kind of the whole game and it would suck in our opinion if we did that.

Nor will we sell boosts that will impact #2.

Emote Pack - of course we'll have the basics for free. But we felt like this is another good and fair revenue generator.

Character slots - feels reasonable.

6) Crates - You can find crates sometimes in game. They're filled with random cool stuff from the store. We're considering letting you see what's in them before you buy a key (ala Dota 2.).

This idea isn't fully locked yet.

That Monetization thread has turned out to be a terrific source of ideas and it also is helping us steer clear of the stuff you just don't want to see.
More to come late this week.

It sounds like H1Z1 will be the survival sandbox game when it's done — depending on how The Division is going to play out combat wise, because a huge urban environment is a lot more appealing than the standard rural worlds/maps — It would seem that DayZ is just way too slow with basically everything and frankly imo the ArmA engine is poop for MMO worlds, Unity doesn't seem to be up for the task either judging by how Rust handles full servers. A good engine specifically built/tuned for MMO worlds seem to be the key

I think it is a little sad though that the sort of 'originals' whom even are usually sorta Indie, just seems to not get it done right, and now the big established companies are going to swoop in with the 'grand' versions of these original ideas.

Alas, it's still nice that Indie developers are leading the way to new forms of gameplay.
