Older Games

Lately I've been going back and playing all the old games I used to enjoy years ago, can't believe it's already been 10+ years since some of these came out.

The two really worth mentioning:

Warrior Kings: Battles

Came out in 2003.  Excellent strategy game, the game play is fantastic and there's a surprising amount of variation each time you play.  Despite having come out 11 years ago, the graphics actually aren't that awful.

Rise of Nations

Also came out in 2003.  Basically a sped up real time version of Civilization, you work your way up through technology, build cities, have naval battles, nuclear wars, and of course manage a shit ton of workers.  Graphics aren't too fantastic, but still an excellent game even by today's standards.

And then the ones that I'm not going to write a lot about:

Ricochet (surprisingly fun, if you bought HL1 before steam came out you should already have it)
The Specialists (old school HL1 mod, used to play on the roleplay servers but even the base game is awesome)
Empire Earth (another old school RTS, similar to AoE and RoN, but not quite as good in my opinion.)
Age of Empires (well, duh)
Sven Co-op (HL1 coop mod, so fucking nostalgic)

These are really just the ones I've revisited so far, I know for a fact I'm missing hundreds of excellent old games that are still playable today.  With that said, you should check these out if you haven't already played them.

Has anyone else been going back to older games?

P.S.  HL2 will be a decade old this year.

Played the ass out of The Specialists years back, amazing mod, used to love playing Kung Fu build, kicking guns out of peoples hands and beating the shit out of them.

Ah Rise of Nations.

That one and Stronghold Crusader we played the crap out of with friends in small LAN parties. (3 rarely 4 people)

Also, am I the only one that has the feels, because we call these 'older' games now? :/

I bought 40% of all games on gog.com and played half but only finished 3-4 until now because they consume so much time but it's really worth it!

I never played Stronghold Crusader, but I've heard a lot about it.

And yeah, Warrior Kings is actually pretty great.  The only real problem is the lack of maps for multiplayer, but the campaign is great and there's a lot of diversity in the units and tactics you use.  Definitely worth trying if you're into the old school RTS platform.

I included Empire Earth for the nostalgia, it's really not that great of a game, but it still deserves an honorable mention.

EE has so many flaws to it, it's still a fun game to play with some friends now and then.

I always though Empire Earth was hilarious, fun for that reason, but not the greatest in terms of gameplay.

*shrug*

I always played to medieval period and ended it there. Once you brought in bombers, giant mechs (whatever they were called) and so forth, it kind of made me lose interest. Although its funny as hell to cheat and get to that stage and bomb the hell out of the other civilizations while they were still in the stone age. Brings a whole new meaning to "bomb them back to the stone age".

It was fun for me to try and build up and try to hold off vs the computers as I tried to expand out then never expand outwards afterwards. Ofc that eventually gets boring since they never get past my first line of defense or if they do, they do such minimal damage that its inconsequential. Then I conquer the map anyway or stop playing. I got the game late so no one seemed to be interested in playing just to the dark ages/medieval era. Everyone wanted to go to the end and throw mechs at each other. Meh.

My main problem with RTS like EE is that you either control one unit at time, or you box single units into a big group. Making 40+ units to do exactly what you want requires ungodly ammount of micromanagement.

Thank god for squad based units, that allow RTS games not to degenerate into "Drag a box around a fuckhueg group of units and send them all into enemy base".

How can it be your problem if that's what such a game is about. :P

My oldest gaming memory would have to be playing Golden Axe. I used to sit on an old wooden chair whilst I played and it was incredibly uncomfortable to sit on for longer than 10 minutes. I can remember always getting frustrated when the enemies would knock me off of my giant lizard or when those little goblin-like-things would come on to the screen and you would have to try and hit them but despite knowing that they were going to appear, I would always end up being surprised by them.

I generally avoid playing old, old games these days. I find that when you remove the nostalgia goggles, they really aren't as great as we remember them to be.
