One of the most fun matches I've had in Aoe2 was at a lan party where we had a 4 man free for all and the map was one huge forest with small pockets for your base and gold / stone. So to reach resources or the enemy you had to make a path in the forest, which resulted in some fun maneuvers and paths made out of a shit ton of towers and walls. Forgot about my woodcutting settlers at the end of the game and they cut open a path right into my base
