Those who bought one during Kickstarter were smart people. For their money (275$ early bird I think) they got DK1 and will get consumer version for free.

Retail price for consumer version is 599 USD in USA or 700 EUR in Germany. Hopefully HTC Vive won't be priced much higher because it will be much better VR/AR device.

Yes I preordered it with the intent to cancel and get the vive if the price isn't too much more and the release date not too much longer

I own a DK2 and I advise everyone to wait for serious reviewing before jumping on one headset or the other.

It requires so many ports it's insane.

3 - 3.0 USB Slots
1 - 2.0 USB Slot
1 - 1.3 HDMI Slot

We got one at our college and I´m currently working with Unity, which supports Oculus Rift. I at least gotta try it once to implement it into a small game :o

The VR tech is ready. And frankly, I think the new controller things are largely pointless novelty. You can use a keyboard and mouse just fine. The huge problem is that there is nothing to do with your VR headset. It is likely that whatever VR set ends up being commercially successful in the coming years will be the one with the best game lineup. That is, the one that has at least one decent game to begin with.

I like motion controllers because they turn the VR into gimmicky experience like playing Nintendo Wii. Up to one hour of messing around your room with them controllers is fine for me. People who expect to play a lot longer with VR on regular basis may experience serious adverse effects. VR tech is great, but doubt they consulted medical personnel when they designed it. I'm more worried about effects on our eyes after few years of playing four hours on average with that thing, but rare feeling of motion sickness during daily use of VR could turn into something nasty over time as well. Eyes to screen distance is what bothers me the most. Many of us wear glasses because we're focusing on screen pretty much whole day (work/home). Now imagine if we stared at screen few inches away from our eyes for same periods of time...

VR is not meant to be replacement for "legacy" gaming, which is something certain people will learn the hard way.

I don't believe the motion sickness issue to be real. At least for people who don't have an unusual predisposition for it. Sure, the first week you can't use it for very long before feeling nauseous, but that naturally goes away with time if you stop using the device when you start feeling nauseous. Getting your VR legs is a real thing. Today I can totally imagine spending a whole afternoon playing in a DK2, as long as the game has proper support.

As for the distance to the screen, they are also much less bright than typical screens.

Still, it would be neat, if they could make it with the technology that Kindle uses for their ebook readers. You know the ink. Then, it would need even less brightening and would be pretty okay for eyes.
This is about being straight out retarded. Children see in slow motion like owls.

Dont get your hopes up too much lol, from what I have read they where planning on being the more expensive "premium" option

Mate of mine has the Original dev 1 rift and is getting the consumer one, glad I can at least try it because £530 is just too much. Plus there are many things I would rather buy for that money
