ya 17th century doesnt get a lot of attention in german schools either,  even the 30years war is handled quite shortly

Some time ago I read Peter Englund's work on the 30 years war. In his book Englund focuses on the Swedish perspective on the war and the biography of Erik Dahlberg, a Swedish officier who later (after the 30YW, during the Deluge) rised to the rank of a marshal of the Swedish army. It was really an interesting change from the usual German perspective on the 17th century (usually limited on the religious clash and the decay of the HRE's central power).

Heh, I read it in last year and indeed it gives you a new, different point of view than you got from school lessons. And after all it's a good book to read

You're right, I can only recommend it. You actually learn stuff far away from the mainstream history lessons. I never knew for example that Sweden tried to establish an own presence in North America/Virginia and that the Dutch were driving them out so aggressively!
