I read that holding a weapon for a sec deals more dmg. Same is with bows(tider the circle bigger the dmg?)?

Melee attacks do the most damage if you hold them for a little over one second (counting one second is pretty close if you have 50+ ping). This also increases chance of crushthrough on maul weapons.

Hold time does not change damage on bows, only accuracy (decreases with time). It does nothing on crossbows and thrown weapons.

irl something shorted on the shuttle and laika overheated and died within a few hours of liftoff and for a brief while one could look up to the stars and see a light shooting across the sky that was actually a warm dog corpse slingshoting about the earth at thousands of miles per hour which was arguably humanity's greatest achievement so far

Huh? Pretty sure the hold time for maximum damage is 0.5 seconds. You're right that it is around a second if you include the wind-up of your attack.

For ranged weapons I really have no clue. I want to believe so (at least for throwing) to make myself feel better for how much it hurts.

There was also a damage dropoff if you held too long, but I don't know the specifics of that.

Yeah, the way I wrote it could be misread. If I'm trying to get crushthrough overheads I count one second from when I hold left click then release. If you listen to your character, they will grunt if you hold long enough for a "max'' attack. If you use the same weapon a long time, you'll get the hang of it and be able to do it by muscle memory instead of counting.

I'd love to see graphs/charts of how your damage fluctuates as you hold an attack.
