I watched a full length video of it and i'm wondering why the divers sound like they're on helium when they speak!?

Heliox is a breathing gas composed of a mixture of helium (He) and oxygen (O2).

heliox is most likely to be used in deep commercial diving. It is also sometimes used by diving enthusiasts, particularly those using rebreathers, which conserve the breathing gas at depth much better than open circuit scuba.

Because at that depth they are breathing a mixture of oxygen and helium I believe, look it up.

I liked the part in the video where the South African guy on the support vessel is talking to the survivor:

I'm wondering now, 30m isn't that much, even I can swim that and more in apnea. Maybe he should have done that if of course there is a way to get out of the ship and also if he knows the actual depth.

I can do 2x 25m horizontally without any push in apnea without much preparation, and you can probably do the same. Apnea champions have techniques to extend the time they can survive consciously without air, like intensive breathing right before entering the water. As swimming up is not considerably harder than swimming horizontally (or even easier actually, depending on your body), 30 meters up doesn't sound like a challenge. The only real problem would be pressure.

Yeah, if a/ he had made it out of an upside down ship in total darkness and b/ was a proffesional swimmer, he still would have drownd because the bends would have made him unable to swim as he went up


He was a fat nigerian cook. I doubt he has access to a depth pool and training to make sure he is always ready to swim up 30 metres...

Fact is, the gas mix you choose depends on the depth you plan to go and how long you plan to stay underwater. When it goes to technical diving its quite common to have 2 or 3 bottles, sometimes with different mixtures, with you.
