We ended up rewarding both top kdr and net kills last battle. They are both useful, but kdr definitely favors ranged. Essentially giving out top melee/ranged player rewards this way.

Have to applaud people like you. In my opinion strat and crpg should be 100% separate entities, other than the xp which will of course carry over. Participating in a big battle should be incentive enough for the mercs to sign up. If they do well, i.e. kill more enemies, that means larger xp ticks for them and their team, which means more xp for them overall, so the mercs should want to do well. In an ideal world this would be enough to get mercs to play strat and go all tryhard. Also of course there is the epeen involved for those mercs that care. Who ever started this trend of paying mercs with crpg gold is clearly a massive tryhard and should just stop so we can all fight hard for the thing that counts: expee.

Rewarding for KDR and Kills is one thing. Paying players off, which is what you did, shows : a) how much people don't want to fight for you, b) how willing you are to sacrifice your clan's name for strat (which in all honesty doesn't last as long as most clans do) and c) how much of a try hard a clan can be.

Just let people sign up for who they want to sign up for instead of pestering them to fight for you with the bribe of gold. This allows players to actually think your are a decent group of people rather than a bunch of try hards who would get extremely butt hurt losing AND having to pay gold to mercs.

Man, best melee KD in yet another battle, Chinese ping as shown in the actual and factual picture in both of these and I never got paid  . I think I got 20k once like 5 months ago out of pity. Farming NA1 in light gear is probably more profitable anyways.
