i was thinking of maxing 1h to 198 but the prospect of having effective hoplite in the build as well was far too tempting :D

Yeah. With 1h it's really good since you can carry both a 1h and decent polearm(or 2h). With 9ath you won't get weighed down that much carrying them both. 33-36 is good enough for me against horses if I need to pick one up.
