The Turkish immigrant created the popular fast food after he established a market stall in Berlin in 1972.

I think it's more about the döner part. You know, the idea that he could put a huge meat block on a turning (döner) vertical spit and slowly roast the external layers, then only cut those away to get the meat used in the kebab. Kebab itself is probably ancient.
