Prohibition is never a good way of settling things but so is propaganda through every means possible, including shitton of movies and games. Well, this one is not a game but I have one pretty example stuck to my mind like black tar. That "Black Hawk Down" movie. The scene where the aircraft goes down and children jump around the wreckage like imps from hell... You see the dead soldier and a photo of his family in his hand (not sure if he was holding it). And nobody even asks: "What the fuck is the USA army doing in Somali" for example.

I wouldn't say that there is something like "censorship" (apart from age restrictions ofc) about video games in the west, but still in some cases video games are regarded as means of "propaganda". Wasn't there a game that should promote service in the US armed forces? America's Army or something?

Sometimes I'm glad that we in Germany "only" have to mess around with those age restriction issues ("please no blood in video games"). Imagine they would ban games that show Germany in a negative light. The market for strategy and shooter games would partially collapse...  :D

Germany is the worst place in the West when it comes to censorship.

Germany is the worst place in the West when it comes to censorship.

Depends from which point of view you see it.

EDIT: I agree that sometimes political correctness is an even worse censor than all Goebbels and Himmlers together.

Still not sure what you're talking about. No other country in the West censors as much as Germany.

Germany is the worst place in the West when it comes to censorship.

What they've done to C&C Generals as example, is shameful.

Hmm, ok, i'll take that back, was pretty sure there were some. In any case, you can't deny that the vast majority of video games, that involve some sort of warfare, whether historical or fictional, tend to portray US as some sort of guardian angel of all things good, which is a form of propaganda too.

These games also aren't created or funded by the Government, and even the ones that are (America's Army) don't portray the USA as the "guardian angel of all things good".  America's Army 3 was set in your typical U.S intervention over a smaller country's internal problems.  And even then, the gameplay itself was advertisement for the actual meaning behind the game itself, as it was made to educate people on the "standard and beliefs" of the U.S Army.

However, games like Call of Duty often portray the U.S as the good guys do so because it's just easier.  It's simple to go "U.S good guys" because the largest portion of their market is in the U.S itself, and everybody knows American's are patriotic and love to see their own country in a positive light.

Shit, even the newest America's Army basically portrays the entire game as "war games" or training missions, what with the simunition (paint rounds) and all that.

Because the game developers make them that way. Not because they'd be censored if they weren't.

If you think Hollywood is an arm of the U.S. government, especially the right-wing war monger gun toting conservative faction of it, you don't know America. Movies and games produced in the U.S. have one thing in mind when they are made and that is how much money people will pay to see it or play it. Propaganda is created with the purpose of influencing the way people think about a topic. It isn't propaganda when you are delivering the message people are paying you to say. America isn't a Democracy or a Republic. It is a Capitalist state and money is what directs its actions. Just ask the Supreme Court who ruled not so long ago that money is speech and corporations are people.

i never made such a statement, ofc the sensorship part is immoral. just made the comment to point out alot of american games have a patriotic perspective. and one can always wonder if money is being pumped into the businesses to make them that way.
