Not the first game to use directional combat

So poking around my collection of old games from my snes, playstation, n64, and pc i found a copy of Jet Li: Rise to Honor for the playstation 2.  Im not sure if this was the first game to ever use this, however its the first that i knew of, and was introduced to.  Rise to Honor, used directional combat to fight either a single or multiple enemies by use of the right analog stick.  Pushing left would cause a left strike, right a strike from the right of course and the same for blocking.  So by doing this you were essentially flailing all over the screen attacking foes from all directions.  Of course the settings are quite different, but the mechanics are there.  Anyways this came out in 2004 so if you decide to search for it, the graphics wont be up to snuff with anything current, and you might have to dust off your playstation 2 if you havent already thrown it away.  Im not sure if the ps3 has a playback ability for ps2 games.

Many games have directional attacking, but does it have directional blocking ?

it does, has men with guns and rifles, and i think at one point a helicopter with guns;  Id say there is ranged lol.


Directional blocking: Im pretty sure it does,  I havent played this since it came out in 2004 so kind of hard to remember.

Was thinking Die by the Sword too, certainly was the first free form attack game, but didn't have directional blocks, though.

Was thinking Die by the Sword too, certainly was the first free form attack game, but didn't have directional blocks, though.

The placement of your sword and shield could block attacks I believe.  So technically, it did have directional blocking as well.  I remember parrying many times with my dad when we played that game.

The hitboxes are wonky (Old game so no problems) but the weapons do collide with each other.

OMG I was gonna mention this game!

This game was the shit, I actually played it back in the day.

You could chop off a goblins arm which was holding a sword, and pick up the arm/sword and use it as a weapon... fucking epic!
Even had multiplier where you could record attack animations/swings and then bind it to a key.

Loved that fucking game! +1 on the suggestion sir.

fucking Robotron lol, i had a Atari 2600 back in the day with the wood paneling lol.  I didnt even think about Robotron, though i was goin with something with similarities to fighting in combat.  I guess i did use the words "directional combat" and this does fit.
