Good asian film recomendations

I've seen some really brilliant asian films recently, that made me want to find more. not anime and not necessarily Japanese/historicial, altho playing shogun 2 again did make me search out some of them.

So I want to recommend some and maybe have you recomend me some, because obviously there must be millions out there that don't see much western attention. tempted to describe them but I don't want to spoil anything.

Absolutely must watch:
Ran (1985)
Old Boy (2003)

Really good:
13 assassins
The Raid: Redemption

Decent:
hara kiri: death of a samurai

A Bittersweet Life
GP506
Breathless
Once Upon a Time in High School
Exiled
The Election
Infernal affairs

First 3 are definitely my favourite, great stories, great characters etc. Other than that, they're all great films, and worth watching...

The Protector (Tony Jaa)
skip to 1:40 for the action to start

Sukiyaki Western Django

Directed by Takashi Miike (same director as 13 assassins)
A Japanese movie where all the actors are speaking (heavy accented) english. Some people don't like it at all... could be the Japanese humor or just that some people don't like Miike films.... but I loved it.
It's pretty much a "fistful of dollars" (clint eastwood) remake, which in itself was a remake of Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo".
Also "Yojimbo" is great if you don't mind watching black n white. Akira Kurosawa (same director as "ran") is a legendary director for good reason. His movies are very unique in their style of film/choreography.

By Asian film, do you mean "combat" asian films ? Films with mainly asian actors ? Films directed by an asian ?

If it's not the first, i'd gladly throw out "Avalon", 2001, from Mamoru Oshii.
A "must-see". Awesome music, nice effects and great atmosphere.

My Way is a pretty good movie, not sure if it's an Asian company who made it but it has Asian languages and actors. Then again it also has Russians, germans, and the rare americans from time to time.

Most recently, Dragon was awesome- if you liked 13 Assassins, well, you'll love that. Internal Affairs was already mentioned. There were a lot of decent Hong Kong produced cop dramas from the nineties.

Hardboiled pretty much introduced Gun Fu to the world.

I Not Stupid was pretty great, though I feel like a lot of it may not have the same impact if you've never been around that culture.

Be With Me, if you're into the tortured, depressing indie movie thing.

From what I gathered, and the films he's watched. Not really looking for samurai or war films, and he watches them in their native language, probably with subtitles...

Just watched "Old Boy"

That movie was long... and interesting. Engaging I think would be the most descriptive word for it.
Fight choreography and camera work was awesome. Plot was a mind trip. Definitely made me laugh a few times too.

Gotta say though, I'm a bigger fan of Hara Kiri :3
