Hitboxes and damage calculation is so fucked up in this game. I tried really hard to love it but I can't.
WoTR had a ton of potential, but it sadly ended up being a pretty bad game.
Whether or not a player lands a hit is decided by the client of the attacker. This means that if you get attacked by somebody with 150+ ping, it becomes almost impossible to block them.
At one point there was a perk that allowed you to score an unblockable hit after blocking an attack, leading to hilarious 1v1 standoffs where neither player was willing to attack first. I think they may have fixed this now, though.
Plate armor is so powerful that it is literally impossible to damage a plate-wearing player with a swing from a one-handed sword, meaning that the plate-user merely has to block down to become invincible versus such swords. There is also no reason wear anything except plate.
To top it all off, despite the fact that the metagame in pubs hasn't seemed to evolve past early 2010 Warband (figure-8 two-handed swinging, with the addition of plate armor), the devs saw fit to nerf parrying by adding a delay before parries take effect. So now, the handful of players who actually put time in to get good at the game find that the skills they learned are nearly useless against fast weapons. It is far more effective to constantly range game.
There
were aspects of the game I liked, that I feel Warband could have adopted. For example, clearly indicating how much damage attacks do, and clearly indicating how holds modify swing damage. Such instances are few and far between, though.
