Use an underpowered one like I do!  Go for style points rather than stats.

If you're used to the pre-patch side sword, you can use the long espada eslavona now. Other than that, try out some different ones and find which suits you.

I think I was the first one to use it after the patch, since so many stats were changed itI bought it for its sensibility and I have used it almost every round since.  Statistically it's a little worse than the long espada but, when considering price and style, the Italian sword is better.  I'd like a name change though, right now it seems unusually vague for cRPG gear (e.g. Milanese plate, Italian falchion, etc.).

In my humble opinion Fighting Axe and Military Sickle are very good weapons all around because of their length, and they serve their purpose just as fine as other weapon in their category; Axe for smashing shields and Sickle for killing tincans.
