The yumi is an asymmetric bow. I read several different theories why it was designed that way. One is that it allowed the short Japanese footmen (Chinese called them dwarves at that time)  to use longer bows - even while kneeling. Another theory is that it was used on horseback with having an easier time changing aiming direction over the neck of the horse than with a symmetric (long) bow. We went with the last one. Fun fact, samurais where mainly horse archers who fought on horseback with a Yumi, but I guess they did it because it sucked so fucking hard. It makes sense but maybe not in your narrow eurocentric mind.
