What's up with chopsticks?

Seriously, they've been around for 1000's of years (probably since man first picked up a stick to eat food with), but we've had these recent improvements in eating utensils in the last 1000 or so years, namely forks and spoons and knives.

I can see if you're dirt poor, but why would people use them just out of "tradition"?  Reminds me of hipsters, who would reject using a better tool for a job, out of "tradition"?

There's a certain way of eating with chinese food that actually makes them make sense. More like a shovel type and then you pick up the large pieces. Works fine with practice but I always laugh at people trying to pick up grains of rice with chopsticks.

Spoons and forks are not recent improvements. Its probably more a case of if its not broke don't fix it. If you grew up with chopsticks you would not want to bother with forks or spoons most likely
If you have ranged troubles use this:

I know they're not recent improvements, it was sarcasm  :P That's my point, spoons and forks have been around forever, why not use an improved eating utensil?

The meat is pre-cut so you don't need a knife. Chopsticks are basically used like forks except you don't stab your food with them (that is the european style, americans are weird one-armed creatures that use forks like spoons).

The only real difference is the spoon, which asians have their own (admittedly completely impractical) sort.

I must admit I prefer eating chinese food with chopsticks where possible, but I always have to smile when I see asian people in real chinese restaurants eating with a fork.

I guess it's not much of an issue for them :)

I shovel food with forks...on top of stabbing as well.  Not going to get a spoon dirty if I can use a fork for the task.

haha goretooth that's what my wife suggested when I said she was silly for using chop sticks at Asian restaurants.  She said, well using your logic, you should be all about sporks.

Was in London china town today trying to figure out where to eat. We looked for the spot with the most Asians waiting outside before it opened and were glad we did so.
My tip for eating in London is don't eat English food.

I use my fork like a spoon when the food makes that more practical than stabbing it. Shoveling with a fork is sometimes better than a spoon because a fork is flat and you can shove it below a layer of food much easier. I only ever eat according to proper knife and fork etiquette when eating out or at respectable people, otherwise for the sake of practicality, anything goes.

That's a valid tip everywhere. But you will only find english food in England.

Actually I always use chopsticks for asian food, be it instant noodles or the quality restaurant shit (in which case you would have to ask the waiter to get western cutlery anyway). Using a knife and a fork when you don't need it always feels much too barbaric compared to the subtlety and simplicity of chopsticks.

Also you can throw them in the trashcan after use, unlike metal cutlery.

Also my comment about americans was about first cutting everything then eating solely with the right hand (wanking off with the other ?) after that.

1. Stab piece of meat with your fork
2. use rest of the forkhead for spoon purposes(eg. noodles, rice or potato mash/pieces)
3. put it in ya mouf
4. profit
