I had insurance at the time I visited the doctor, but they only step in once I hit $500 spent out of pocket.  I literally sat down for 15 minutes with the doctor, we talked and then he prescribed a prescription for me.

I got the bill and minus $33 the insurance company was able to "haggle" for me (so they took off $33) and the $20 co-pay, I end up owing $190 for a 15 minute chat with the doctor.

Is that normal for anyone else who lives in North America?  That seems really fucking crazy to me...going to call and bitch to them during my lunch today, but I already know it's not going to go anywhere, so I'll just end up telling them to get fucked and I'll take my business somewhere else.

I'm more concerned about the kind of money one has to pay to get proper education. Which in turn forces young doctors to be hugely in dept, on top of all the costly equipment they often need.

Before I joined the military, I had a string of personal friends who were doctors. Most of my treatment was off the books and free. Then I moved to some town far away from all of them. A year passed, and I got swine flu. Went to the doctor...they charged me about (it was like 300) the same for the visit, and proceeded to say it would cost more to treat the flu properly. I walked out and just slept for a month. It was actually...one of the most depressing moments in my life. Realizing I couldn't cover that bill.

I had to get stitches a couple years back in my thumb because of an accident at work. That was $300 for six stitches.

I also found out later that my job should've paid for it because it happened on the clock, no one told me this until about 6 months later.
