2 slots for bastard sword?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but why does the bastard sword require 2 slots?

The short spear and military fork are both pole weapons and only require 1 slot, both seem a lot more difficult to carry than a bastard sword which can be worn like a regular sword.

Having 1 slot two handed weapons would open up more posibilities in build creation in my opinion, so please - bastard sword for 1 slot

I think it's more of a balance isse than which would be more difficult to carry in a realistic situation. I'm going to go out on a limb and say bastard sword > short spear/military folk

There are actually a few 2h weapons that are only 1 slot.

The mace is the only one listed under the 2h shop (AFAIK), but under the 1h shop there's 2h mode weapons that are only 1 slot:

military sickle
fighting axe
langes messer

The ability to use a 1 slot weapon in 2h mode is a pretty big advantage (IMO).  Because in a crunch you can drop your excess gear and pick up a nice masterwork longsword or claymore on the battlefield and go into beast mode.

In dire situations you could smash all your food to a pulp with a cudgel and scoop it with your hands.

Come to think of it, you could improvise a fairly serviceable kitchen.

Cudgel + Round Steel Buckler = Mortar and Pestle.
Pavise Shield = Cutting Board
AGI Spamurai = Blender
Tin Can armor + Torches = Oven
