About Us :
We are a bunch of old and new players, who have decided to form the glorious Varangian Guard.
We are inactive at the current Strategus, so each member is allowed to do whatever he likes.
About the clan theme :
The Varangian Guard was an elite unit of the Byzantine Army, from the 10th to the 14th centuries, whose members served as personal bodyguards of the Byzantine Emperors. They are known for being primarily composed of Germanic peoples, specifically, Scandinavians (the Guard was formed 60 years before the end of the Viking age) and Anglo-Saxons from England ,particularly after the Norman Invasion.
The guard was first formed under Emperor Basil II in 988, following the Christianization of Kievan Rus' by Vladimir I of Kiev. Vladimir, who had recently usurped power in Kiev with an army of Varangian warriors, sent 6,000 men to Basil as part of a military assistance agreement.
Gear restriction
We are very strict with the gear, so you are only allowed to use only the items that follow the theme of the clan.
Rus Varangian(Russian Gear) :
The Rus were a group of Varangians, possibly of Swedish origin, who had a leader named Rurik. Due to civil strife in Russia, the leaders invited Rurik and his Rus kinsmen to come rule over them. Rurik, located himself in Novgorod. On account of these Varangians, the district of Novgorod became known as Russian (Rus) land.
Anglo-Saxon Varangian (Norman-Saxon Gear) :
Among the troops recruited into service of the Byzantine Emperor were Anglo-Saxons, who eventually made up the main component of the traditional foreign mercenary force that guarded the person of the Emperor. The crisis in Anglo-Saxon state and society brought on by the Norman Conquest created an Anglo-Saxon emigration, part of which found refuge and employment in Byzantium. Up until the Norman conquest of England, the Varangian guards consisted chiefly of Scandinavian and Kievan Rus’ warriors.
Viking Varangian (Nordic Gear) :
The 10th century was the zenith of the Viking Age. The warriors of Scandinavia, renowned for their ferocity, cunning, and fighting prowess were feared throughout Europe.
Emperor Basill II admired the determination and strength of the Viking Varangians and made the decision to employ them as his new personal bodyguards.
Akolouthos Varangian (Byzantine Gear) :
Wherever the Emperor went, the Varangians were in attendance. They accompanied him in formal ceremony; they guarded his palace, offices, and in his great reception hall they stood guard about the throne. Their commander was called the Akolouthos , due to his constant proximity to the Emperor, and his place was to stand immediately behind the Emperor in processions or behind the throne at formal audience.
Can I join? We are accepting only melee players, there is a 7 day trial, in which you will be able to use our banner but not our tag, you have to be in TS so we can get to know each other a bit better, to apply for clan, send a PM to Panos or Centurii .
On the other hand, if we invite you to join us, there is no need for the 7 day trial, and that is because we have probably seen you on the battlefield and we liked your gamestyle.
