Is calling a chinese person "chinaman" racist? (not trying to offend anyone)

So I am in EU_DOUBLE_EXP and want to talk to the multiple chinese people in the server so I say chinaman and every motherfucking chinese person in the server flips shit. So on today's game of "Is It Racist", you decide if chinaman is racist. I personally do not see how that can be interpreted as being racist.
