They've tried melee-only servers, people lose interest fast.

crpg needs a good ' only melee server' i think.

They've done that. They failed.

People may complain about squishies shooting things at them, but without those squishies the average melee has problems getting kills. They go to a server with melee only and find out that they actually suck as the pro-melee mow them down. So they get frustrated and decide that while squishy ranged may be annoying, at least they are within their ability to kill. Once the average melee player is gone, the pro-melee leave too because they can no longer maintain their pro k/d against other pro's and their playtime degenerates into complaining about the attack/block/chamber/feint paradigm.

Learn to adapt to the conditions on the battlefield, learn to see where your team and the enemy is flowing towards.  And my god man, stop trying to change the game around your play style, try to change your play style around the game.

Or you know, play single player.

Stick with your teammates (an archer, a hoplite/pikemen, or the "zerg" horde; take your pick), carry a polearm that you can use with a shield, camp next a building where horseman can't hurt you, stop chasing people up hills.

The problem is you, not the maps or the fact there's horsemen or ranged.
