Should I choose an Old Round Shield or a Green Practice Shield?

Is 2 body armor and 82 hit points better than no body armor and 133 hit points?

They both are useless in my eyes unless you have like 11 shield skill. Good for blocking 3 arrows and 1 hit with a sword but that's it.

Old round shield can take 1 or 2 arrows more before breaking.

The armor rating at 0 and 2 is pointless, every single hit will be stronger than 2 so it will count against your hit points of the shield.

I always thought that the armor rating was the threshold of damage that had to be cleared before it started to take away from the shield's hit points.

go with green for its speed

So the new response to ranged ragers is not "get a shield", it is "learn to chamber ranged nub!"

Is it a linear thing like that or does it function like normal armor soak?

Its like armor soak. So if you have a 0 resistance shield hit by 30 damage, the shield takes 30. If you have a shield with 20 resistance, it will take 10 damage.

Edit..was thinking of Plain Cav shield..I would use that if you have 1 shield skill. Out of Old Round or Practice shield though I'd still get the round one due to width and extra HP. All are near useless in melee though so speed isn't that important

If you have ranged troubles use this:

That's why I love my knightly heater shield and the 33 armor rating (but it has only like 230 hit points, so I can take a lot of sword hits, but hardly any axe hits)

Basically no shield can take a lot of axe hits, unless you have 13 shield skill. With the knightly heater shield, the one handed axes basically ignore the resistance and two handed/pole axes are going to ignore it and do more damage.

Axes have such high damage to shields from their own high base damage plus the huge bonus that they overwhelm most soak. against axes a high HP shield is better than a low HP, high armor shield but still something like a bardiche will chew through those extra 200-300 HP pretty quickly, maybe takes 2-4 more hits.

Also Egan, I believe resistance is just for ability to stop arrows/bolts from punching through. I think you mean armour.

As far as I know, its the same thing. Just says armor on the website and resistance in game. As far as axes, they deal twice as much damage as their values state. So a +0 broad on handed battle axe has 35c, but if you hit a shield, it is 70c damage. (before factoring resistance/armor)

My understanding was that damage to shield was the same as to a player with that armor rating, times 1-0.08*(shield skill). And axes just have their base damage doubled before being multiplied by 1-0.08*(shield skill).

I always shoot for at least 20 shield armor so arbalest bolts don't penetrate, but additional armor above that seems to be largely "wasted" in the sense that shields are balanced to trade a lot of HPs for a little armor.

Using the damage calculator, my +3 Hand Pavise is about the same durability against axes as a +3 Plated Covered Round Shield (which is a whopping 25 speed slower!). Plate covered may withstand more hits from a peasant knife, but in a real battle, it's axes that break your shield, not hundreds of hits from weak cut weapons.
