Could be happening. Well, not literally 2 aliens from the movie holding up a flatscreen, but if creatures advanced enough to travel space did see us prying into our solar system, before allowing us to see them either by tellescope or exploration, they would monitor us: since we have seen no solid evidence of anything not naturally formed in our immediate are of space, we must conclude that:
(i) Non-earth advanced life does not inhabit space near us, or
(ii) Non-earth advanced life chooses to hide itself from us, if this then either:
1/ Such life considers us too dangerous to communicate with due to our destructive inability to see the bigger picture or
2/ Such life considers us useful to its a/ future expansion, b/ weapons testing
(iii) Non-earth advanced life is SO advanced that they we cannot evidence or their creation because WE are the evidence, the solar system and space around us and galaxy and universe as WE can see and perceive it is ALL their creation.
In all of these cases, it is not worth worrying about, since aliens are either not there, too backward for their lifecycles to even be observable from space, or so advanced that there is nothing we could to bargain with them on an equal footing and are therefor much life dogs wondering what people are thinking.
OR: there is life, advanced or not, all thruout the universe but it is so far from our carbon based evolution that it is unobservable by us.
THE ONLY other way we could meet aliens would be if they could travel great distances, so great that we cannot actually see anything of their existence simply because of the speed of light: they have evolved built and colonized SINCE the light we are currently seeing from their area of space left their area...if you can understand how I have phrased that. If they DID manage to ever meet us before we saw them, they would have to travel faster than light, and that would only be possible 2 ways: 1> The most amazing mathematics you could ever imagine, x1000, because they would have to use the almost non-existence of friction in space to accelerate continuously, but they would need a power-source, the most obvious one being radiation: radiation from stars: this would require them to a/ be able to plot a course across space that would take into account the many hundreds of years it would likely take to reach faster than light speeds, adjust that for the fact that any preconceptions they had about speed/time would no longer be mathematically or physically applicable, and NOT HIT ANYTHING.... again, if creatures from space could travel space they would be so different to us we would never be able to relate/communicate in any meaningful way. But, just in case, I hope you all can explain the decimal counting system and a few of the basics of mathematical and physical knowledge that we have with either drawings or objects, maybe even colours or sounds. Cause language in movies is always so easy, of course we can decipher their language, or them ours, but really, realistically, communication would just be a nogo...
