Surcoats look better than the shorter tunics if you are going for a crusader look, from what I've experienced.

irl something shorted on the shuttle and laika overheated and died within a few hours of liftoff and for a brief while one could look up to the stars and see a light shooting across the sky that was actually a warm dog corpse slingshoting about the earth at thousands of miles per hour which was arguably humanity's greatest achievement so far

What era or region?

Are we talking early Crusader period in the Holy Lands, or Late Era in the Holy Lands when they lost what they finally had? Are we talking when they lastly were finally established in the Holy Lands and were no longer crusaders but caretakers of the various kingdoms such as the Kingdom of Antioch or the Kingdom of Jerusalem? Or perhaps we are talking about the Crusaders who established the short-lived Latin Empire by gutting the Eastern Roman Empire AKA Byzantine Empire. Or better yet, are we talking about the Livonian order and the States of the Teutonic Order who were the Baltic crusaders, or perhaps the Iberian crusaders down in what we now know as Spain? Or lastly, are we talking about the shattered remnant of the Knights Hospitaller when they were holding Rhodes against the Ottomans, back when they were the last "hope" of making another venture into the Holy Lands?
I'm not normal and I don't pretend so, my approach is pretty much a bomb crescendo.
Death is a fun way to pass the time though, several little bullets moving in staccato.
The terror of my reign will live on in infamy, singing when they die like a dead man's symphony.

Provided you have a crusaderish banner, otherwise use the white or black one, depending on your prefered order.

Such a pretty shield

Or any of the other arming swords, maybe a warspear on the side.

Top it off with a moustache, leather boots and mail gauntlets and you'll be one handsome Templar sergeant. Basically what Templar Brede uses. If you want to be a heavier crusader, just use a heavier heraldic armour and some other heavy western helmet. If you are going Teutonic or Hospitaller with either of their banners, use Heraldic Transitional and the Great Helmet with Hat, epic underused combo.

I'd  go for something like this...
(click to show/hide)

Also I like the Flat topped helmet, and Mail Coif with that look. Also as teeth mentioned any of the arming swords are good too.

Also I remember there was a really cool 'crusader' sword that was sitting in one of the resources folders for ages before being removed altogether, don't know why they never added it. would have been awesome :(

If you wanted to go heavy armour. It's not the most historically accurate Crusader but looks cool anyway...
