Medieval Siege

Knights in shining armor charging each other in great pitched battles - that is the popular view of warfare in the Middle Ages. In reality, most medieval conflict involved the attacking of castles, and mounted knights were not much use against stone walls. A siege against a castle could take weeks, even months - the attacking army pitted against a well-defended garrison within. By the end of the 13th century, the science of defensive architecture had reached a peak. Stone walls were built thicker and taller than ever before. And archers could easily pick off advancing attackers. To further frustrate attempts at breaching the walls, castles were situated on rocky crags, or surrounded by water. But every advance in castle defense drove attackers to devise better siege weapons.

Medieval Arms Race
War in medieval times was about the control of land. Garrisons of knights and other soldiers who lived in castles controlled the land around their stone fortresses. To conquer a territory, an attacking army would have to strike and take these central strongholds.

To do so, they would launch a siege. Over the centuries, medieval armies developed military strategies to fight a siege. Weapons of war also evolved, often in response to the technological advances of the enemy. By the mid-12th century, siege warfare had developed into a science, practiced by an engineer corps called ingeniatores.

Here we describe some of the major weapons and strategies used in what became a medieval arms race. Let the siege begin.

Will be looking into this over the next few weeks as part of my course assessment.

Quote from:
What were the main developments in siege warfare between the mid-eleventh and early thirteenth centuries, and how effective were they?

I will be mostly focussing on Anglo-Norman warfare so don't expect a whole lot of shocking revelations.

No, they had to use up one quiver after the other, arrow after arrow, because the arrows were all connected with thin ropes to each other, so that they were easier to retrieve later.

Smart archers have connected them in an interchanging fashion (1 bodkin, 1 broadhead, 1 bodkin, 1 broadhead, etc.), so that they were more versatile. This meant wasting a few arrows, though, if you needed to shoot several targets of the same vulnerability. Lords didn't like this obviously, because fletchers were damn expensive back then.
