Single player survival type of games

I've heard it called "wilderness" survival, but I'm not seeing many games in this genre that interest me.  Most are top down games that look like they have 8 bit graphics (look like Dragon Warrior that I played in 1989 on NES).

I really enjoyed Wurm Online, but would look for something similar that was single player, thus allowing there not to be such a slow skill gain.

I've never tried Minecraft, it just never looked like it would appeal to me, but maybe that's the closest I'd be able to find in this genre?

Anyone know of any games that come to mind (any suggestions are welcomed).  My ideal game would be something that throws you in the 16th century of North American wilderness and you choose how to make a go at it (and gaining resources to make things as well as skills along the way).  Possibly encountering other small settlements, native American's, animals, etc

Salem is set in 16th century NA, low fantasy wilderness survival game. But it's a sandbox MMO, not singleplayer. Also permadeath.

Yeah I saw Salem not too long ago, didn't think it was out yet.  Looks a lot more cartooney than I'd prefer, but maybe I'll have to give it a try.  Not completely against the idea of it being multiplayer, just figured it'd be more forgiving (i.e. less competition and player killers) if single player.  Also perma death would be preferred by me in a game of this type.

Thanks for the suggestion...

Actually now that I checked it out, I already signed up for the beta a while back.  So I'll have to try it out

It's in closed beta but keys are easily acquired at http://beta.salemthegame.com/

Yeah the style is cartoonish which isn't to my liking (I actually prefered the graphics of their previous game, which was isometric 2d), but you get used to it :D (they are also updating graphics regularly, new models, textures and so on)
About player killing.. well the world is huge and it's not that easy to meet other people, especially those that will just kill you on sight. I've been playing since November and have yet to die.

Yeah Salem sounds like EXACTLY what you were describing minus the fact that it's not single-player. Would give it a whirl, pretty fun.

If you are ready to suffer, you should try dwarf fortress in adventure mode (it is free !).

Minecraft isn't really about survival anymore after a few hours of learning the basics.

The Unreal World is a survival roguelike that matches your request pretty closely (minus the graphics bit - it looks like pretty much any tile-based roguelike). It's a survival game that drops you in the middle of the wilderness with few supplies. The game is not free, but I remember it being very good last time I played it (which was quite a few years ago).

You start with nearly nothing. Your initial goal is usually to prepare for winter: build a log cabin, craft some warm clothes, get a large supply of firewood, and get a large store of smoked meat. Beyond that, you can do whatever you like. There are also small settlements scattered about that you can trade with (or murder).

A word of caution: if you see a Lynx, then stay the hell away.

What about terraria?

It's a fantasy survival game which you can build, craft and fight bosses online with people or play alone offline.

Stranded 2 is good fun and free!

Definitely going to give Unreal World a go. Haven't heard of it before.

I'm thinking of giving stranded 2 a try as well as unreal world.

I gave Salem a try yesterday for about 2 hours and just couldn't get into it. It seems like it has some promising aspects to it, but wasn't feeling it.

Thanks for your suggestions

I got a thread bookmarked about games like this. Sadly, most of them are multiplayer. Still worth to take a look at.
