Now we discuss about this and I see in my equipment list that my 3x Great Axe (a.k.a "Titus My Best Friend", the weapon I use the most) has a little sister:

FYI, my normal Mighty Great Axe:

Sell for 6,612

Obviously the cheaper sell price could indicate a lower upkeep cost (but I cannot confirm) but the thing is that I cannot select it when I play: there is just one Great Axe, the normal one, in the list (but I have also too much gears and many stuff don't appear in the list, that might be the reason).

My theory is "THAT" could be the compensation to the last heirloom buff: some stats boost when playing.

Multiple. Items is a bug, a lot of ppl who never had the message still have double items (with one they can't use) btw don't try to sell the double item it will delete both... (Check bug report, there is many thread about this bug, devs are working on it).

Although on another note, my brother hasn't played for a long time but logged into his account again this morning, he had three sets of mail boots, all with slightly worse deteriorations of "brokeness" (couldn't think of a better word).

I'm not 100% sure that this actually relates but... it could help a little...

Well I have my MW Mancleaver (warcleaver) on me at all times.  I still wonder if it has to do with wearing the same gear all the time as I never ever change my gear setup on Gorath (Vyrus I do and he's only gotten the message 3 times).

I have still no idea what is changed, but I can tell you that many kills or good kd seems to be not required. I got it yesterday again and I had 3 kills 3 deaths.
I am pretty sure it has to do something with the upkeep, or lately im just lucky to have a higher multiplier than normal. Withouth changing my standard gear it seems that I am getting alot more money than before.

Although I can't confirm that because I can't compare my itemprices which seem to not change on the website anyways.

Pointless. The upkeep cost is the same, it's the upkeep frequency that may be different.

It is possible to check that, we just need someone that had it multiple times (like 3+) with the same set and someone that didnt. They each play 100 rounds (or more) and we see who got more money.

If the difference is superieur by 5% (or smth like that), then we found it.

I agree with kroxigore, I think it affects the frequency of upkeep. This would make sense as it is a number that is not displayed on the gear or your equipment screen but could still be modified by the developers. From a "better understanding of your gear" perspective this would make sense too: The better you know your equipment the less likely you are to break it. You' ll know not to overstretch your bow or overtire your horse etc. You would be better able to position your shields strong points to raise for damage instead of its weak points or whatever, or where to hit with your sword on armor so it wont get damaged as much are some possible abstractions on this. This would also help customisability as you might be able to wear a bit more expensive gear for longer periods of time. This would even out a bit against heirlooming, where less expensive gear can become better by heirlooming and still be lighter in the process too. If this is true probably a lot of players will start to cry nerf it, even if heirlooming might still be more overpowered . I would love it though
