Yeah that varies from player to player. I have played pretty much every single hero by 100 wins (including chen, meepo and invoker), while some haven't done even half. But the real problem in matchmaking lies with pairing up real newbies (talking about <20 wins here) against a full team of ~500 wins guys. I do see this happen less often after the last patch, but still.

Obviously playing it once is not enough to be good at it, but it's enough to memorize what the hero can do to you or their team if you're up against it

Obviously win count as a measure of one's capability is very innacurate once they're out of the newbie stage. But like I said in my example, the difference between a 10 wins guy (provided he's not a smurf, dota/lol pro) and a 100 wins guy is pretty huge, even though the 100 wins guy still sucks.

I'd say LoL backround would rather harm than give some advantage since the game develops lots of habits that are unwanted in dota. HoN background might help though.

I'm 18 games ahead right now, I seem to be winning a lot more than losing at the minute, something's not right.

I keep getting like 4-6 winning streaks then getting stomped in one game then back to winning.

i usually get a winning streak after i drop below a certain win %, it's like valves matchmaking is dead set on keeping your win rate at ~50%

My team did random only in the all pick game and we got 4 int heroes after AM got picked. So funny.

That's really epic, rufio. And MM isn't as broken as some people may think. It's also a bit better than in dota 1 before where one guy hosted (or later on a bot hosted) and 9 (or 10) random people joined the game and you could not even know how many hours of dota they played.

Well seeing as the avarage winrate is like 48% - 52%. The matchmaking is obviously pretty good and balanced.
