Hey all –
Look, not going for any kind of exception here, but the honest truth is that I’ve been kept against my will behind a firewall for a few weeks now that will not let me get on the website to watch the Battlegrounds video (I’m at hospital). To that end I know nothing about the game, so my poem is (hopefully) going off of the themes I expect to find therein, as opposed to whatever tidbits of information about the game the rest of you are privy to. Hope that fits the requirement well enough. To that end:


The crows

The prow of an empty ship
Resting against cold sands

The border-walls of a sea-cliff village
Mortared by an ancient kin

There the white-spangled cloak of night was riven
Black streaks cutting star-glow
As wings beat silent upon a cold wind
Soft caws grating
The plod of gentle waves upon the naked shore.


The crows had come.


Silence, then
Echoing past the reach of what had only just been raging
Battle-cries harrowing the setting of the sun
While sailcloth bellowed
And thatched roofs burned;
A din for the heavens
Calling those black birds in from the fields
From the dells beyond the river
To watch, men slaying and slain
And wait
Cawing and crooning
For the feast that would follow.

Thirty dead lay strewn beneath the dark sky, there
Two banners between them, their bodies still warm.

Bodies wracked with heavy taxes
And slow repose alike
Cloven helmets and shattered shafts
Trophies for the earth
Once flesh had faded.
Once the murder was fed.

But not all men were still, below.

Aye, three yet held
Desperate
Wild-eyed and terrible
Strangling hilt and haft
Teeth bared in agony
Striving
For the close.

Three men
Bathed in tired moonlight
Swathed in frayed bravado
Chests heaving
Minds lost.

Two wore white
Lions cresting upon their wounded shields
The third, a raven black adorning
The blue-blazed heraldry of his late-dead lord
His captain
Whose eyes had grown glassy where he lay upon the border wall
Now sport for the very birds he had once drawn upon his banner.

But blood can mute a banner's voice
Life-blood of friend and foe
All three sharing its brutal hue
Sprayed across what decency they had
Upon waking
At the gates of dawn;
Blood culled forth with axe and sword
Broken through morningstar’s reaping
Merciless arrow
Screaming lungs, faithless and depraved
Overwhelming the braver few.

Blood to conform them
But not enough to unite them
As there under crow-watch
The night never darker
The two set upon the one.

To end the fray.

Defend to the last their broken hamlet;
Their fathers' pride
Now a tomb to a people lost.

And from a taken knee
The ground slick beneath his last stand
Against them rose with final breath
That single wounded raider
Hopeless without his crew
To bare his ship away.
