The sun slowly ascends, a red-glowing ball majestically rising over the mountains. The sunrays slowly glide down the slope and through the woods, dispersing the morning mist, breaking through the last treetops and illuminating the roofs of some houses. The village down in the valley, enclosed between the high mountain range and the thick forest, slowly awakes to life. A rooster crows and the first people emerge from their houses. They are clothed like simple peasants, but their walk is upright and proud. The village community assembles in front of the biggest building and starts to chatter, sitting on simple wooden benches while the women serve bread, fruits and water. As the door opens and the leader steps out, the crowd grows silent. He greets the people and begins to discuss plans for the day. The fields have to be cultivated, the wall around the village repaired, and everything has to be prepared for the winter. Just as they want to get up, a figure appears on the way to the village. He leads a horse carrying sword and shield and wears a surcoat, though the coat of arms is faded and dirty. He must have experienced a lot, as his face is scarred and marked by time and his view is dull and absently sweeps into distance. The villagers arise, and two guards clothed in black and green step forward with the village elder. He greets the stranger and asks for his intention. The stranger asks wether this is the village of Balde, whose inhabitants call themselves Baltimores. He looks at the assembly, and as they keep silent, wondering but not adverse, he speaks on. He calls himself a fallen knight, dreary of fighting and looking for a place to rest. He had heard of Balde and set to search for it, and he hoped to be accepted like many before him. The village elder instructs him to have a seat and find some rest, while he consults with the assembly. The villagers retreat into the great house and start to debate. Most of them find no ill in accepting the stranger, as they all came like him once. Yet some believe that they are too many already, and have to conserve their identity. The debate goes on, until the elder speaks up: 'Have we refused any of you?'Thus the discussion is finished. The villagers go on to tend to their work, and the elder shows the village to the stranger. He leads him along the houses, shows him the fields and the forest, and at last the armoury. Here hang the green and black surcoats of Baltimore, the swords, shields and axes. As the newcomer asks why they need those weapons, the elder answers: 'Though we are very secluded here, and live like simple peasants, we are all warriors too. There are some knights in this region interested in our lands. They neither accept nor respect our way of life, and thus we have to be able to defend ourselves. There is also a group of trolling cocksucking my old friends in this region, the children of the green sun. We aid them when and where we can.'After some time in the village, the stranger has visibly become better. He discards his old surcoat and takes the green and black of Balde. One fine morning, the community sits together again, another stranger appears on his way to Balde...this stranger could be you.
Deal?
In a rich man's world!?
