Same as with any other piece of equipment, choose one you have tried, and like playing with.
Shieldwise, my choices are:
-Knightly kite shield. Great against non shield breakers, run away from them. (or elite cav shield, similar but round, which some people say gives a bigger covering area)
-Huscarl's Good at everything, a very solid choice. Bigger but heavier and slower
-One of the steel ones. Avoid shieldbreakers at all costs, otherwise they are nearly unbreakable. Even slower

So choose your shield style, try it, then loom it. You can always trade it if you are not happy with it in the future

Loom Elite Cavalry Shield. It is great and if you don't like it you can trade it against any other shield and get gold on top of it. Other great choices are Knightly Heater, Knightly Kite and Plate Covered Round Shield. Huscarl's is also a very good shield but not worth looming because it is already quite popular. Better offer 2 loompoints (+ some gold) on the marketplace and ask for the +3 version of it.

heavy round shield, imo, over anything. :) elite cav, knightly kite, knightly heather & plate covered are amazing shields aswell.

For coverage reasons, you're better off with round shields. The lower side coverage of other shields is quite noticeable.

A +3 Heavy round with 6 shield skill will rarely break unless you let it get hit by shield breakers.

If you're using a shield that has a weight of 6 or less, heavy weapons with held attacks can shield stun you pretty easily.

Some people LOVE the metal shields, but I personally don't like them. I find them way to slow. But, just play around with a few and find one that works well for you.

I love me some heavy round shield, too bad I can't use it on horse :/
This game isn't about being skillful as much as its about saying things in general chat that enrage people who then go to murder you but in their rage they make dumb mistakes which gets them killed.

- Board Shield : It only needs one slot, despite being weight 8. This is a very solid choice (also it's simply better than the heavy version).
- Plate Covered Round Shield : An excellent 1 slot shield, although fugly.
- Knightly Heater Shield : Obviously the best looking shield by far :P it's quite balanced but lacks coverage due to not being round.
- Elite Cavalry Shield : I'd say it is better than the knightly heater/kite because of the coverage.
- Huscarl : Best coverage, too slow for my taste.
- Steel shield : Some people use them very effectively, I can't stand being so slow.
- Round steel Buckler (the other one is shit) : Be an asshole. It does break fast though. Not for everybody either.

The board shield, just to make others think you cheat when you pull out 3 other slots out of your ass.

Huscarl is too slow for you but not the Board shield ? Huscarl is just better. His problem is his 2 slots. So it depends of your build requirement.

if a +1 heavy round (let alone a +3) is breaking too fast for you, you are blocking too much and not being aggressive enough.
