Closed to Trade

I am new to Strat (I have been working on trading for about 2 weeks) and it seems almost everyone is closed to trade. I was wondering if this is caused by a game mechanic that promotes closed borders or if the factions just want to dissuade free traders like myself who enjoy playing but don't have the time to commit to a clan.

If the economy model were set up correctly, it would seem that any faction that is open to free trade would be far more successful than one that isn't as more trade=more money flow=more wealth overall. I think a good system would be to make it so trade is beneficial to a settlement and factions don't have to horde their S&D, keeping all others out.

Thoughts?

Another entirely unrelated question: Why are HoC, TkoV, and MB all in the same faction? As I said before, I'm quite new, but it seems rather silly that so many clans are thrown together to make a super clan while other clans go at it alone and still have some territory.

well in the current trade system s&d is everything. Ofc if your clan takes fiefs, takes effort to protect them and pay upkeep to garrison them, they want to fully benefit of their economical advantages. And at the moment the best way to do that is by using all the s&d for yourself, and not letting others steal it from you. Some clans are rather nice and support free trade, others attack everyone that enters their fief.

Some clans blob together because they are total dicks, some because they are forced to by enemy's, some just because why not and others just like to cuddle up into each other.

Ontopic:
Most people have tons of S&D due to chadz raising the S&D you get to promote free people, he even made the troop amounts in villages uncheckable for none-owners but borders are still closed. People are paranoid of strangers and you'll have a hard time finding many people let you wander through their lands, and practically none if there is a slight chance of you hurting the people you're passing through unless you know the people or they're extraordinarely nice.
1H stab is the fastest, strongest and longest 1H animation. There's no reason NOT to use it in all instances. I don't know if it's OP, but it's boring. 1H used to be fun because you had a fast (left), long (right) and the most devastating attack (stab) and had to choose the best attack for each occasion.

Yeah the prosperity thing put almost as much of a damper on independent trading as the fief efficiency did last round.  There's still a couple fiefs on the NA side open to free trade though.  The sell locations are circled green and the buying locations red:

The FCC fiefs (yellow) probably have about 25% tax each, the FPF fiefs (bright pink) have 10% taxes and the red DL castle in the south has a 10% tax too.  If you're an independent trader, it's probably a good idea to contact clans who's fiefs you're passing by on the way to these locations, so they know you're not going to try and use their S&D.

EDIT: Actually, you can sell as much as you want in Shulus but hold off in buying in Uslum for the moment.

You forgot New Ulburban, open trade area.  I'd suggest selling though, high goods price and high tax.

Nope, but I'm going to change my name on my next gen in order to get rid of the confusion. Thanks for all the input, I've been trying to think of a better economic system, does chadz actually read the suggestions page or would I be wasting my time?

The game mechanics are good for trade. As on EU side we have open borders in all Dhirim area.
They all have 15 % tax maximum and that alone helps keeping the area secured. There are many traders in and around this area as long as they follow the rules.

1. No raids attack on traders in Dhirim area. Pirates/Rebels/idiots will be attacked.
2. No army bigger then 300 troops at this stage.

The close borders policy is a drawback from the two mega alliances on EU.  If its good or bad who knows.
