I was in The Bronx last week and went into Burger King for a quick bite. As I was standing in line, I heard this recognizable whisper behind me. I turned around for a split second and almost fell over. It was Steve Carell! He was eying the menu and whispering to himself.
At first, I didn't want to say anything as I didn't want to come off as a freakazoid, let alone interrupt him during lunchtime. But then I thought "How often am I going to come across a celeb in Burger King?", so I turned around again.
Initially, I was stunned to discover how small he was in person. I'm 5'9" myself and I gotta say, the 5'9" he is listed as in his bio must be a PR thing. He's definitely not that tall. If I had to peg it, I'd say he's 5'6.5". It's just weird as he looks so much bigger on screen in his movies. I guess camera angles and lifts play a part.
Anyway, after I got over his somewhat diminutive size, I said "Hello". He smiled and said "Hi" back and stuck out his hand for me to shake, which I did. He has a good handshake with a nice grip. Not too soft, not too firm - just right. I told him that I love his films and that he is a great talent. He chuckled and thanked me.
About that time, it was time for me to order, so our said goodbye and that was that.
I stayed around for a bit and watched him eat his meal. He seemed to enjoy it immensely. I was very discrete and he didn't see me watching him. When he left, I went up to his table. He'd left a bit of his burger and a few fries, which I polished off. So, in a way, even though I am a straight male, I have "kissed" Steve Carrel as his saliva has been in my mouth.
Oh, and I kept his drinking cup. I'm gonna try and sell it on ebay ;)
