So, is there a way to download and install directly from Steam or is amazon going to make me download the game with their installer and then download and install it again with Steam?

Did you get 5$ coupon with it? Save it, after New Year's Eve you'll be able to use it on top seller games. It will last for a month (until Jan 31st 2013.) and you can use it to grab 4.99$ games for free. Some of those games will probably be on sale in January and they will cost 4.99$

Do not buy 4.99$ games in next month and a half, go for more expensive ones. Because after Jan 1st you'll get them for free.

Last winter I got 10 free games that way (spent around 50$, got myself 15-20 games) and I'm not even American
