They're a clan of two players, and have had 2 thousand troops converted into population there for a couple weeks already.

3000 troops actually. Castles start with 1k troops and they added 3k in tickets in 2 weeks.

regardless of clan size, 3k tickets is almost 1.5 weeks of nothing but recruiting for close to 20-30 people.(depending on the amount of people)
(btw 1 person would have made, since strat start 336 troops. you would need 10 people recruiting CONTINUALLY for 2 weeks to get that. they've had that for longer if smooth is correct, which means abuse or glitch used.)

Maybe they bought it from someone?

The problem however is that population count has been that high or similar for a long time by now.

Of course they failed, cuz you did it wrong!

The elite guards throughout history were nearly all times recruited from other lands then the ones the ruler hailed from. Tihis way they would have little interest in local politics. Also almost allways, they we're recruited from the lowest ranks of the populace and bestowed with great wealth, so their loyalty would be undisputed. What you need is fierce warriors, with little or no moral or gold, that hail from other lands then your own.
I'm not saying i'm applying, but i am applying :)
