I liked Kafein's best, and offer this Guthrie song as a testament to what the American spirit is meant to encompass, in my mind and heart. Lyrics to the song tackle the definition of liberty, individual rights and property ownership, and was actually quite subversive and controversial for it's time; the place Woody writes from is after experiencing the Dust Bowl of the 30's and seeing first hand the racism and classism at work in America.
The earth is good and plentiful, with enough for all. There's no reason why anyone should go without their basic needs met. What race, religion, nationality, gender, age, sexual preference, or even species we are give no excuse to marginalize or otherwise subjugate anyone. Bless America, yes, but bless all nations, and more to the point, bless the natural world free of political borders, and all who inhabit it, for we are all one extended family, and we all bear the duty of preserving our collective home for the generations to come.
