I have played as somewhat equal strength/agility and a high strength archer. I've used horn bow, yumi, rus bow, and long bow. I would recommend going for a medium to high agility build for your first generation. Until you have the hang of it, drawing your bow and firing seems like it takes forever. If you stay with horn bow or yumi, you can also try playing a horse archer for a generation if you want (you will be very ineffective until high levels, but then you can be devastating and untouchable if you play right).
For your first generation, try going 18 st / 21 agi. Go for 6 power draw, high weapons master, and at least 4 athletics. Wear light armor (there are threads that detail the penalties to aim you take for wearing armor as an archer). Spend the rest on what you want - a shield can help you fend off enemies till help arrives, a 1h and some power strike gives you at least some chance if you get cornered. Don't skimp out on archery wpf - go for 130 at the very least. 50-75 wpf in 1handed should be enough if you want to carry a backup weapon.
The most important skill to learn is surveying your team at the start of the round. Look where they are going, check the terrain, and find a spot you can provide arrow fire from. You want a vantage point (so you can shoot over instead of into your allies) and at least 1 piece of cover.
I have tried many different classes and builds. Archery was one of the harder ones to get the hang of. The skill ceiling is very high, so if you put effort into it you can be a great asset to your team.
