Does experience cap when you hit generation 16, or when you've retired 16 times?

As the headline says, which one is it? I am gen 16 atm, which means I've retired 15 times. Am I capped at the bonus exp given from gens or do I still have one gen to go?

Bonus is capped at gen 16, not after 16 retirements.
