Being the best player does not mean being the best dueler.
The best player is determined based on the perception of the community, based on battlefield presence, based on "holy shit I wish I had more athletics so I could outrun this badass motherfucker", based on awareness and adaptation, based on "if this guy is supporting his team I will have a hard time killing anyone this round", based on being so good (not annoying!) he/she is making people GTX.

In short: based on being the baddest and meanest sunuvabitch out there that everyone wants on their team and no one wants to fight!

That being said: duels can be used to convince the audience, but are not a deciding factor.
