I use the long maul literally every day. Length seems the same to me. The nerf to turning was a HUGE nerf to the long maul though. One of my favorite tricks was to pretend to miss with the side swing, pass them on the side and immediately turn around and overhead. Ah, good times.
The great maul is WAY better than the long maul also. Not only is it way the fuck faster, heavier AND does more damage, it's shorter length makes it a better weapon.
If you have a long maul and someone facehugs you, you literally can't hit them. Your weapon is too slow. You need to keep them at length to have a chance at hitting them. The great maul doesn't have that problem as you WANT people to be close to you.
So to use the long maul effectively you need at least 6 athletics on NA, which cuts down on your powerstrike. With a lower powerstrike, the only way you reliably crushthrough is by speed bonus and held attacks.
It's a truly TERRIBLE weapon, but I love it so.
