Or do the following: Put shield away when there's an anti-shield weapon coming up, they're slower and unbalanced, usually, so you can progressively get better at blocking, after that, play the odd round without any shield.

That's how I did it.

That would be a decent way to learn in siege. Doing it in battle would lead to a lot of downtime though, without getting all that much practice in.

Even in battle you can and have to pick your fights...
1h-only isn't for the front line anyway.

That seemed like a brilliant idea- two hits from a big shield breaker and I'm 1 h only anyways.  But just checked the game, and I'm 160 ping.  I guess I'll just throw jarids randomly then die:(

I meant more that if his blocking is poor, then he's going to put his shield away, miss one block against the axe user, die, and spend the next two minutes twiddling his thumbs. That's a really rough way to learn how to manually block.

Siege is a bit better, especially if he is on the attacking team. Duel is the best practice though, since he can spend his time practicing his blocking with nearly no downtime between fights.

Vancouver Canada, but I think its my connection- web stick    Euro servers seem to have the same ping as NA.  Guess I'll have to pay double internet bills to dominate this game.

Vodner is spot on.  Totally agree, the more intense the practice the faster you will learn.  I think a mixture of Siege and Duel is the best way to learn. I would not play duel exclusively, its great for learning to block but siege will teach you how to deal with changing terrain (narrow walkways, elevated terrain, stairs, fighting in confined spaces, etc.) and fighting more then 1 person at a time.

Yeah, tethered / satellite internet is going to give a really awful melee experience. You're not going to have enough time to consistently counter people trying to double-swing you, plus player positions are going to be horribly out of sync on your screen.

I agree entirely. That's how I spent my first six months or so playing Warband. I can't begin to imagine how aggravating playing battle as a new player would be.

I did this. Certainly needs a "special" mindset. Downside: still can't block manually

Yeah, was way more fun than auto-running into the enemy and still getting the same XP...
