edit: also 1v1 dueling is all they are proposing that will be fun for about 10 minutes ;)
That is the first step. And even 1 vs 1 duelling in Warband is really interesting to me and so much others. I have duelled so many hours, trying to get better at this combat system. Now imagine a combat system with full freedom of movement. Where parrying is done by bringing your controller in the way of the blade that you see incoming. Where you can pommel someone in the face. The depth of such a system is not even comparable to pvkii or even Warband.

Fully immersive, 1 to 1 controlled swordfighting would better than anything I have ever played. If you really think what this guy is talking about is comparable to playing Zelda on the Wii than you must have completely misunderstood the video.

If they pull this off it would be such a step forward in the gaming industry. Motion controlled gaming has such enormous potential but what the big companies manage to pull out of it is just depressing. Both the Kinect and Move and Wii are so severly flawed for hardcore gaming.

Too bad I am very skeptical of them pulling it off properly and if they will I'm afraid for the pricetag. I'd rather have it expensive and good though than cheap and mediocre. If they make what I hope it will be they deserve hundreds of euros.

you could probably already plug a motion controller into your pc and duel someone in warband and I doubt it will be largely different. you will still get owned by someone using K&M, even if this clang game comes out the same will be true.

its pretty tried and proven that motion controls (other than the mouse) are only good for casual games.

Exactly SgtTeeh, these guys aren't amateurs and they are looking off screen (my new catch phrase to replace out of the box). Greg Bear is one of his buddies writing The Mongoliad and part of this big group of talented people. I'm sure more than a couple of them could entirely fund the project without breaking a sweat. They are just doing it in a business like manner. If fall short on Angel funding, they've got it in their own back pockets.
Also, they are guys who are writers, who swordfight for real, and now are making a video game to house their stories and swordfighting. They aren't just some geeks sitting in their dorm room thinking it would be cool to make a realistic swordfighting game.

No, your suggestion wouldn't be even close to what they are trying to accomplish with CLANG.  Your suggestion would still only allow you to swing 4 basic directions.  CLANG is trying to allow an infinite amount of swing directions.

And the 1v1 duelling is what is needed before they could implement full scale battles.  one step at a time.

isn't that what age of chiv remake is aiming for? lets see how that works out, my bet is it will be much worse than our 4 direction system.

anyway I hope i'm wrong and this CLANG is amazing but personally I just think its not going to work out. guess we'll have to see. its just surprises me that i'm the only one being skeptical about this.

No, thats being built to be used with a mouse and keyboard. This is going to use a motion controller that controls the sword on your screen directly.

Yea looks neat,  but all I want is that sword style xbox controller.  Might even make COD fun again.

Wow, you're stating these things as facts when you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. How about providing some proof to back up your BS? Or even some sort of a logical thought process?

Reminds me when the Wii was still quite new i tried to use a Mote+Nunchuck to control M&B. It was working ok: nunchuck as WASD, the mote to move camera, mote+A+swing to attack and mote+B+nudge to block. But i couldn't get it to a point where i would prefer it over mouse+keyboard (might have been my fault though). Maybe it works better today with more libaries, knowledge and wiimote plus available. Back then it was already difficult getting the right bluetooth stick and drivers to recognize the wii stuff.

As a developer, I don't believe for a second this will be made into a playable game and commercialized.
As a player, I would love to try it.

Well, it's too good to be true, but I think they can pull it off. The technology is there, atleast I think, You'd think it would be not so hard to accurately track an object and translate it to ingame movement. This guy is a novelist, who can probably easily get enough money together even if the kickstarter thing wouldn't pull off.

They also seem to have the right approach. Creating a gameplay platform on which others can expand. They are also independent, they don't seem to care much for the commercial succes of the 'game'.

I am very skeptical but if anyone has a good chance of pulling it off it seems to be these guys.

I will be incredibly (and pleasantly) surprised if anything comes of this. Other than Warband, SWJK:JA was the only game I've played with even remotely entertaining melee mechanics (even then, it's is a distant second).

I don't know about that. I found 1v1 dueling in Warband to be endless fun when I was just starting to learn the game. In fact, it was the duels in Reapy's infantry primer that convinced me to buy the game. I think I honestly spent at least 50% of my time dueling back then.

It's kind of stale now, but that's mostly just due to Warband mechanics not feeling all that deep 1v1 at high level play. A melee game with SFII levels of depth would be amazing.

The SW games were amazing because of everything you could do by.. well, being a jedi. Jumping, jedi powers etc etc. Plus there was a lot of lore behind it all.
