I just took the member count on the Ladderpage and calculated the sum of it: 1760 ppl 
As only a part will have signed up there already, there should be at least 3000 ppl playing this mod. Quite a number, didn't think its that much people.

Are there any more accurate numbers?

You should not count the 100 CD keys which was one grey dude's.

Problem with the ladderpage is also that some clans also put alt characters into their ladder. Maybe take 20% of that into account.

Excluding 1000 keys that grey order leaders have and excluding all the alts that other, normal non-cheating players have, I would put the player-count at about 600 to 700 if you take into account server activity and day/night shift players, then from personal experience I would say that my 600-700 guess seems about right.

Also of note, I am drunk, so maybe not thinking straight right now.
