Shield +# purple text?

I was playing my lvl 30 shielder alt last night and got some "Shield +1" purple text before getting a All thine hard work message.  After that the messages started appearing more frequently and ranged from 0 to 2, what's this?

Its s shieldwall bonus, if you are standing in vicinity to other active shielding player your shield skill will temporarily increase.

Except in any actual shieldwall situation (like siege defense), the +shield skill is useless because some mauler will just come up and crushthrough your shield.

The other day I had +5 shield from shieldwall (for 10 total skill), and a mauler just ran up and crushed me, since crushthrough is only a function of shield weight and not skill. Silly that 1 mauler can negate 6 shielders working in unison.

shield walls are ++++ when backed by pikes and archers to prevent that.

Nope.
Just imagine 20 shielders making a circle, holding their shield up permanently. Tell me who can kill them ? Kick isn't a good enough option, so that's why maulers are here.

What is the "All thine hard work" message about?  I got one as well for the first time (or least the first time I noticed) the other day.  And I was no where near a shield wall, so I'm sure they're unrelated.

Strategus crafting skill, based on your equipment you wear when you get it, you'll be able to craft those items (yes, loomed versions even) in strat. Each time you get it for the same items, the better for you, if you play strat.

Ah that makes sense, thanks for the replies. 

I normally don't play as shielder so thought the shield wall bonus only happened in Strategus battles and the numbers were related to ATHW.  Special Officer Doofy over here.  :)
