I've found that when fighting crushthrough weapons their overhead swing a little bugged. When a great maul wielder attempts an overhead swing I most often just dodge to the side and strike. There is an issue, however, in that some maul-wielders then twist the attack so that the downward swing hits my character quite heavily from the side (specifically: it doesn't hit me from above - on my shoulder or head - but laterally around my ankle and waist level). This technique doesn't make much sense to me from a realism perspective and it's extremely frustrating from a gameplay perspective. One of the checks on crushthrough builds is that they're slow and thus must primarily prey on the defensively-minded or unaware. With this technique, however, they can cover as much area as they can reach in front of them without giving opponents opportunity to strike back. My suggestion, for those who know how to do such things, is to give this sideways technique the ability to bump while removing any direct damaging effect. It doesn't make sense that such a lateral strike would do anything but glance off my plate, especially if it's from a rounded weapon. With the bump effect added, though, crushthrough weapons may be somewhat more inclined to play support rather than leading attacks through open fields.
I've encountered this with:
- barmaces (2h)
- great long mauls (polearm)
- great maul (2h)
Has anyone else experienced this? Does it seem overpowered or realistic? What do you think of the aforementioned bump effect?
