Ever notice how many bourbons have Old in the name? Grand-Dad, Old Forrester, Old Crow, Very Old Barton, Old Rip Van Winkle....

Here's a story about Old Crow:

Old Crow was once America's premier whiskey, at least as far as widely-available brands was concerned.

That was before your time. It was before mine, too. It was before Prohibition.
After Prohibition, the brand was owned by National Distillers, who continued to market it as their premier bourbon whiskey.
It was, until the end of the 1980's, what most people thought of when they used the word, Bourbon.

Old Crow.

Not Jim Beam.

Jim Beam was also a major brand of bourbon, but it was not Number One.

That all changed in 1987, when National Distillers went belly up and sold everything to Standard Brands, who happened to own Jim Beam. Suddenly Jim Beam found themselves in control of what they had considered their chief rival. They also now owned other National Distillers brands, such as Old Grand Dad and Old Taylor. What happened next is NOT typical of the way Kentucky whiskey distillers tend to behave toward one another. Mostly, Kentucky whiskey distillers are very much unlike "normal American businessmen" in that they are mutually supportive and not vendictive. When Heaven Hill's distillery burned to the ground in 1996, their "competitors" made facilities available to them so they could continue to meet their contracts and not go bankrupt; there are many other examples.

Beam's handling of Old Crow was not one of them.

Old Grand Dad was meticulously kept as close to the original N.D. product as possible, while gently and slowly melding into Beam-produced bourbon. Even today, it tastes very recognizably like it's predesessor.

Old Taylor, as well, if somewhat less so.

Old Crow, on the other hand, was purposefully destroyed, with malice and forthought. It became a 3-year-old abomination hardly fit for even the bottom shelf of any self-respecting liquor store, and certainly not a product that would appear on the back-bar of any decent establishment. And thus did Jim Beam White Label "become" America's leading brand of bourbon whiskey. Perhaps not a "crime" in the legal sense; maybe more an act of vengeance.
