I would recommend against shield-skill above 3. Here's my current build; haven't seen many like it.

I'll see if I want any other stats at levels above 30. 0 WM is very powerful for 1h, especially if you use a blunt weapon. The speed is just fast enough to duel properly, but the best part is the unorthodox and uncommon speed trips people out and you get free hits.
I was using a single point in shield, but strat battles made me go 2, and I'll likely go to 3 at level 31 or 32. Problem is, I want my shield to break fast. You don't get a stun or anything when your shield shatters, and when you're a good 1h guy, you can use that to your advantage and come out with a very quick leftswing or overhead.
For 1h, don't be scared to use shorter weapons, especially blunt. The short range is brutal for overheads and stabs as well as horizontal swings. Shorter weapon means the sweetspot in the animation is earlier basically...and you won't glance for shit with a short weapon, really. My 65 length MW warhammer is killing it, the stab can't glance with such a heavy, short weapon!
