Steppe Horse...

Hi.  I've been using the build from this link: (http://forum.c-rpg.net/index.php/topic,9160.0.html) [hardest hitting HA build], and with 4 riding, there aren't a lot of choices for horses.  I chose the Steppe Horse.  High maneuverability seemed like a good idea when you're trying to dodge around others shooting arrows into unsuspecting enemies...

I hadn't noticed at the time, but pretty much no one uses Steppe Horses.  Why?  Because they're pretty terrible.  They suck, hard.  Instead of spouting opinions though, let's look at some numbers.

Let's compare it to the next lower level horse, the Rouncey.

Cost:  +1502 Gold
hit points: -10
body armor: -2
difficulty: +1
speed: -5
maneuver: +6
charge: -6

The only benefit is the addition of 6 maneuverability.  For that, everything is worse.  And not by small amounts, either.  10 less HP + 2 less body armor mean that HX can 2 shot or occasionally 1 shot my horse out from under me.  The -5 speed means that any lancer on a Rouncey can catch me and spear the crap out of me, and the reach of the lances means that I can't even maneuver away from them any significant amount before they spear the crap out of me.

Has anyone had any kind of success with the Steppe Horse?  I really want it to be good, but I can't seem to work with it.

edit:  Upon further examination, the problem may be that the Rouncey is way too good for it's location on the price/difficulty scale.  Compare it to the Palfrey, which costs 3k more, it's ridiculous.  The only thing the Palfrey has is 1 more speed, the Rouncey has everything else higher or the same.  10 more HP, 4 more Armor, 2 more charge.  WTF...

I share your opinion, its just not good enough for riding 4. For my taste this horse is a bit to slow. It really is a pain in the ass, you cant outmanouver a rouncey, only on paper. You can turn faster yes, but the speed makes this advantage disappear. Not sure what it is, but I think speed and maneuverability work together, the faster you are the slower you turn, so when a rouncey rider slows down he can turn as fast as you, with 1 less riding.

Needs a change.

As the "maneuverable" option for the low tier horses its pretty shit. Maneuver type horses only become good with desert/arabian. Rouncey is best for any kind of horsemen on a budget/low riding skill.

I would say most notably Merc_Phazh. He has used a steppe horse for 2 years for 1 handed cav.

the steppehorse becomes incredibly good when its tripple loomed. seems like the unloomed horse is juuuuuuust below the stats that would make it a very good option,  the most significant being the speed imo.

that being said,  +6 maneuver is quite awesome.  the rouncey for example is no alternative for horsearchering compared to the steppe horse.

the palfrey-rouncey discripancy is worse imo.

last but not least,  I would say horses should all get the speed and maneuver of their loomed versions,  and the looms would just give them additional body armor and hp.  would make so many things fairer.

As a dedicated HA I always use the steppe horse, mostly because I am low generation and have no money.  :(

It is not bad, but as the op pointed out neither is it very good, high maneuverability is gained for a loss of everything else which is a moot point as there are horses with just about as good maneuverability but better stats later.

Despite this however you can use the high manoverability as HA to great affect against other cav, in my experience the biggest problem is the low HP.

Which is why I would rather use a Destrier or Arabian if I had the money.  :D

steppe horse is the big bro of sumpter... we can't ask much about him you know...

only way I can use it is: loomy horsy or with my stf alt with 10 riding...
So the new response to ranged ragers is not "get a shield", it is "learn to chamber ranged nub!"

Keep in mind op has only 4 riding. If he had higher riding the steppe can become useful (I use it myself as economical horsy sometimes). But of the low riding options, rouncey has the best all round stats.

I would say most notably Merc_Phazh. He has used a steppe horse for 2 years for 1 handed cav.

But let's be honest, he doesn't do very well with it.  Compare what he does on steppe horse with what Lizard, for example, was doing with destrier.
I mean, what have you got to lose? You know, you come from nothing, you're going back to nothing, what have you lost? Nothing!
